Strengths for our group

Jill Peterson

    1. Learner - excited about learning process, process oriented, enjoy the journey to competence

    2. Relator - enjoy close friends, sometimes get taken advantage of as others often take kindness for               weakness, value genuine relationships

    3. Includer - accepting, respect differences, want all to be engaged

    4. Woo - like to talk (HAHA), enjoy interaction, like to make others feel comfortable

    5. Self Assurance - faith in my strengths, able to deliver, know I can do it

  1. Focus: Set goals any time. These goals serve as a compass. Focus forces me to be efficient

  2. Learner: Learning is exciting for me. Outcomeof the learning is less significant than the "getting there". You not necessarily seek to become a subject matter expert

  3. Responsibility: Commitment to complete a job. Excuses are unacceptable. Willingness to volunteer leads to take more than should be done.

  4. Achiever: Every day starts at zero. Internal fire burning inside. Something tangible at the end of the day. Motivation is not a problem

  5. Analytical: It challenges other people. Not to destroy other people ideas. Cause and effect is more obvious to me than it is to other people.

Brandi Hanson

  1. Learner - I love learning new things and accepting challenges and I am passionate about education; therefore, I am excellent at mentoring and tutoring, trying new ideas, and attending conferences, seminars, and classes.

  2. Responsibility - I am dependable. I honor committments and I always strive to do things right. I take ownership of my student's learning and I am willing to volunteer (although probably too much and I may have trouble saying "no" so don't ask me too much!). If a task needs to get done, then I will get it done.

  3. Consistency - I want balance in my life and in my classroom. I am good at standardizing and creating stability. I treat everyone equally and create a consistent classroom environment with reasonable rules. I am excellent at designing policies and procedures although it can give me a headache!

  4. Significance - I enjoy recognition for being a credible and professional person. I am an independent spirit and strive to be exceptional. I set and achieve goals for myself and I can help others set and achieve goals. I am a fabulous spokesperson and portray a positive image to my peers and my students.

  5. Restorative - I can spot flaws in myself and the education system and then help identify solutions to "fix it". I like to return vitality to situations and people by "bringing them back to life". I am good at coaching and encouraging peers and students to improve their quality of life, but I might overstep my boundaries by tring to "fix them" when they really have to "fix themselves".

Mary Kelly

  1. Restorative:  Deal with problems, analyze, enjoy bringing things to closure: I work with students who have disabilities and solve problems by helping them choose careers according to  their disabilitie.

  2. Learner:  Drawn to new experiences, find learning exciting/thrilling:  I learn daily through my experiences teaching my students, and through co-workers.

  3. Focus:  Destination, Evaluate, goals, impatient:  I arrive in a.m., focused on the tasks at hand.

  4. Responsibility:  Take ownership, follow through, get it done:  What ever someone asks me to do, I will follow through and complete, and if I can't I will let someone know and feel like I've let them down.

  5. Harmony:  Find common ground, little to be gained by friction or conflict, practical, down to earth:  I will try to stay out of the way when there is conflict between people, and only get involved when necessary.

Marie Coleman

  1. Learner: love to stay challenged, big lifetime learner proponent for myself and others, everyday I learn something new via blogs, rss & twitter

  2. Achiever:  self-starter, interested in improvement, always working more than required hour

  3. Deliberative:  private, proactive and preventative rather reactive, serious

  4. Futuristic: optimistic, needing to stretch, some vision (though sketch) for a better future, stretched myself when taking Media Specialist position

  5. Intellection:  introspective and quiet, like to discuss and explore learning and thinking with others, my bloggers and twitterers have definitely helped to fill this void.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE - "Did You Know?":

Need to create learning environments and frameworks that help students to be

  • critical thinkers,

  • problem solvers,

  • team players,

  • need to know the why as well as the how

Want to help students learn to learn, learn to study, how to organize...

    Use interactive techniques

Perhaps show "Did You Know?" to students and discuss so there's a better way to move forward

    Develop problem-based learning scenarios

Create the wholistic and interdisciplinary lessons

Technology slant (my bias!) and gives sources (also my bias!)

    YouTube plugin error

yackpack errorPlugin error: That plugin is not available.

    Aug 30th Inservice Conversation Highlights:

    • Need to learn how to learn and we need to teach our students how to learn - Not only is there too much content to teach for the present, but there is no way to teach tomorrow's content
      • Example, in Auto can't teach Ford or Chevy, need to teach technology in general, then students need to how to "dig deeper" and research on their own or in a team, which all can share!
    • Need to learn how to work with others as a teammember
      • Utilize cooperative learning groups
      • Try problem based learning scenarios on the wiki
      • The password for the PBL wiki is "student"
    • Some people need to learn by doing, but also need to learn the "how" & "why"
This 14-minute video of Tony Buzan ('father' of mindmapping) zeroes in on "Teaching How to Learn"
